How long will my SMP session last?
If you are receiving a full SMP procedure or heavy density, expect to be at the clinic for 3-4 hours. If you are having a scar concealment procedure, it can last 2-3 hours.
Is there down time?
There is little to no down time.
How many days do I wait in between sessions?
We recommend waiting 10 to 14 days in between sessions. This allows the scalp to heal and fade so the artist can properly evaluate the results at the next session to plan for the best results.
Does my hair colour matter?
Yes. However, there is a tone that will match any shaved head.
Do I need to shave my head?
No, it is not required. After your consultation, we will advise you on the ideal length of hair for your procedure.
How long to fully heal?
The scalp will fully heal within 3-4 weeks after the final session.
Can I get it removed if I don't like it?
Yes. SMP can be removed by a laser tattoo removal device such as a PicoLaser. We do not do any tattoo removal services.
How long after a hair transplant can I do SMP?
At a minimum, 3 months. However, Dr. Pinette advises waiting 6 months for the scar tissue to settle and new transplanted hairs to start growing. This will help plan the SMP best and ensure you add density where it is needed most. Redness on the scalp has to have subsided and all the areas have to be fully healed before proceeding with SMP.
How do I prepare for my SMP day?
Wash your hair on the morning of the procedure. If you use hair fibres, try to scrub/wash them out the day before if you can. Do not put any products into your hair on the day of treatment.
Alcohol, anti-inflammatories, and aspirin can cause more bleeding so it is best to avoid these the day before the treatment and on the morning of your treatment. You can take all your other normally prescribed medications on the morning of your treatment.
The procedure can take a few hours to complete. Make sure you are hydrated the day before and the day of treatment. Have your regular meal for breakfast or lunch before your procedure. If you have a coffee/tea in the morning, it is okay to have that as usual.
How does SMP work?
During the SMP procedure, a skilled SMP artist uses a fine needle to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the scalp skin. The pigments are carefully matched to the natural hair colour and customized to achieve the desired look, including hairline design and density. Typically, the SMP process involves multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. The sessions are spaced apart to allow for proper healing and pigment settling. Each session involves the careful placement of pigments in the scalp to create tiny, realistic dots or strokes that resemble hair follicles.

Will it look real?
The quality and realism of the scalp micropigmentation may vary tremendously depending on the artist’s skill level. When performed properly, SMP can produce excellent results. Realistic expectations and realistic hairline placement and density are essential for quality results.
What is the size of the needle?
The pigmenting needles are very tiny, similar to a small pin. When the pigment has been applied, it will be difficult to differentiate between pigmentation and real hair.
Does SMP hurt?
For most clients, there can be a mild discomfort during the procedure. Generally, the discomfort becomes more tolerable as the session progresses.
Some areas of the scalp have thinner skin or more nerve endings and these areas can be more sensitive. Usually, SMP is far less painful than a traditional tattoo because it is applied at a far more superficial depth.
The advantage of having SMP in a physician’s office is that Dr. Pinette can provide a field block anesthesia if you request it. This means Dr. Pinette will use tiny needles to provide freezing across the scalp in a way to numb the areas where SMP treatment is planned. Freezing usually will last for the duration of the SMP session. Topical numbing creams can also be applied to the scalp to numb the area.
Do you colour match?
No. We use a black tone diluted into a grey scale to match the tone of a client’s stubble. All stubble tend to take on a grey undertone of varying shades.
How long will my SMP last?
If aftercare is followed carefully after your treatment, it should last 3-5 years before needing a refresh. However, this can vary from scalp to scalp depending on skin chemistry and personal lifestyle.
Will the pigment fade or change colour?
We use a charcoal-based pigment. There is zero colour added to the pigment. This pigment will not turn green or blue if administered correctly. However, if pigment is applied incorrectly, there is a chance of “impression blowout” which results in inconsistent colour hues.
